5 Things You Need To Be Chic

13 Aug 2020

…according to Hubert de Givenchy. And another 3 from BagButler…

Givenchy opened his eponymous fashion house in Paris in 1952 and two years later he became the first designer to launch a ready to wear collection. Givenchy, who died in 2018 aged 91, is known for an elegant simplicity and paired back refinement. His most iconic creation was the black column dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany’s in 1961.  It is safe to say that the little black dress has not been out of style since and never will be. Now that is a legacy!

Sounding like the opposite of a sales pitch it was in 1952 that Givenchy said:

“All a woman needs to be chic is a raincoat, two suits, a pair of trousers and a cashmere sweater.”

So here are the Givenchy five with some personal favourites as examples!

A Raincoat

Can there be a more iconic raincoat than the Burberry? The answer is no! Here is the one we fancy complete with jaunty coloured piping detailing.

Two Suits

If we could choose any 2 suits at the moment it would be these by Chanel, one with trousers and one with a dress and jacket to add a touch of versatility to a lot of luxury.

A Pair Of Trousers

Regarding trousers we are guessing Hubert de Givenchy didn’t mean jeans (quelle horreur) so have opted for a pair of classic, slightly cropped, tailored trousers and thought these from Joseph looked just the job.

A Cashmere Sweater

A simple fine gauge round neck in camel or black always works.  We also like a nice chunkier knit and found this signature style from Amanda Wakeley which is available in camel as well as this gorgeous rose hue.

A Statement Necklace

Worn with the suits, the knit, or the white shirt, a statement necklace is an accessory we would add to the Givenchy / BagButler shortlist.

These are both by Chanel and from our own collection but there are plenty of others out there and more necklaces to rent from our Jewellery and Accessories section.

And… if we were pushed to add in another it would be a Little Black Dress with a cut just like Audrey’s – Thank you Givenchy! 😍
