BAFTAs 2020 – The Dresses And The Details
The biggest night in British film but as we all know award ceremonies are all about the fashion, too!
Black on the Map
Straightforward and striking; can you ever be wrong in black couture? We don’t think so. We noticed at least nine stars beautiful in black at last Sunday’s BAFTAs award ceremony.
From Lily-Rose Depp’s risqué Chanel lace bodysuit to Margot Robbie’s stunning Chanel lace caped gown. From Olivia Coleman’s embroidered and sheer sleeved Alexander McQueen to Saoirse Ronan’s full skirted Gucci dress, black was most definitely back.
Pretty in Pink
Pink was a stand-out theme this year. We saw every shade of pink from the palest of pale on a tiered Miu Miu dress worn by Kaitlyn Dever to Laura Dern looking amazing in deep raspberry Valentino with a shoulder flattering sequined bodice. There was mid pink Giambattista Valli on Ella Balinska and flamingo pink Versace on Scarlett Johansson.
Florence Pugh managed to elegantly combine black and pink in a black mini dress with a full on fuchsia pink over dress by Dries Van Noten.
Drawn to clean lines, our pick of the pinks goes to Renée Zellweger’s elegant column gown in sugar almond pink. In our view this was pink Prada perfection and if we may quote Hugh Grant “Well done Jones”.
When a Cuff is Just Enough
We spotted two sets of cuff bracelets and we liked them very much for their style and their symmetry. Renée Zellweger’s Prada dress was perfectly accessorised with a pair of eye-catching gold cuffs and Lily-Rose Depp’s more daring black lace look was finished with a pair of stunning silver chain and glass pearl cuff bracelets by Chanel. Accessory addicts that we are, this is a trend we will be keeping an eye on.
Double up your cuff for maximum impact and try before you buy. Not all cuffs fit all wrists. Few are size adaptable.
Statement earrings were seen on many including Dee Koppang O’Leary, Gemma Whelan and Saoirse Ronan. Lulu Wang chose to accessorise her rather demur pink and white layered look with spectacular sculptured silver earrings adorned with large drop pearls. The prize for the boldest ear candy though goes to Lady Victoria Hervey.
Dramatic earrings are an easy way to ramp up an evening look and because they frame the face they’re fully visible at the bar, the table and on the dancefloor and so really earn their keep. We love them because they make you feel just a tiny bit more fabulous.
Sequins, Fringes, Ruffles and Bows
The devil is in the detail and we noticed lots of details cropping up right across the sartorial spectrum at the ceremony that we’ll all be seeing more of.
Sequins added glitz to the gowns of Edith Bowman, Naomie Harris, Laura Dern and Scarlett Johansson. After all if you can’t sparkle at the BAFTAs, when can you?
Fringes were evident on several dresses including Naomie Harris’s Michael Kors dress. Alice Eve certainly had fun twirling in her fringes which were from Ralph & Russo’s 2017 collection.
We also spotted many a ruffle, rocked in particular by Ella Balinska and Florence Pugh.
Finally there were bows! Lots of them on Rhoda Ofori-Attah, Charlotte Carroll, Kristen Scott Thomas, Wallis Day, Gemma Whelan and Dee Koppang O’Leary. There were small bows and large bows and on Jodie Turner-Smith a huge bow wrapping up her incredible vibrant yellow Gucci gown.
Next up – The Oscars!
